Water Lily 2009 report

On Wednesday 22md July 9 young anglers turned up to have a bash at the the very old Water Lily cup, I remember fishing for this when I was 8 and it was old then, they fished opposite the boat club at the nearest end of "B" Section to the river bridge.

It was really good to see increasing numbers over last years event, I assume there was a power cut and they could'nt find anything else to do. firstly big thanks go to Pete Milburn for the organising, advertising and general overseeing of the event. The conditions were good with a back wind and silver fish in evidence, the older over 13's group was won by Michael Sparks with 1lb 13oz which in an hour and a half was a good result, he caught silvers and Perch fishing maggot over Hemp. in second place was Mahsin Khurshid with 1lb 5oz mainly Perch with a couple of Roach and Dace, Mahsin managed to throw back a 5 oz Roach and lose a couple of decent Perch which might have made all the difference. Third place went to Ben Croker with 9oz followed by Lewis Brant and Peter Gibbs.

In the under 13's group young Rhis Nesbit carried off the title showing her dad how to do it with a round 1lb of Perch and she was followed by Simon Budd with 2oz and Brandon Evans with .5oz with Joe Welton in next place

At the end of the match Pete presented all the entrants with prizes donated by the angling club and everyone had a very reasonable prize to take home for their efforts. As a final thought thanks go to several of the anglers from the St Ives club who came to give the benefit of their experience to the youngsters, Compo only managed to  scare them and DNW and Senior both said thank you to the lads they were watching as they had learnt loads, not sure it was supposed to be the kids teaching the adults but some of us are still grasping at the basics.

Claude Smith Trophy 2009 report

The attendance at the Claude Smith on Wednesday 12th August was even better then the previous Water Lily with12 fishing, it was a very pleasent evening and other than the millions of Kamikaze Wasps all was serene and calm until the 12 individuals kicked off at the start and then lots of water was displaced and lots of foam created due to the thrashing of various whips, rods and poles.

The fishing was ok in general with a few Roach and Rudd showing plus the ever willing Perch, the winner oif the 11 to 12 age groups was Holly Sparks whose brother also won a section of the Water Lily cup this year, obviously its a family thing, she recorded 1lb 4 1/2 oz with Daniel Wing second weighing 6 1/2 oz with Jacob Johnson and Daniel Chapman in 3rd and 4th place respectively.

In the 13 to 15 age group our very own Tom "I'm not a miner" Myring managed 1st place after he decided to fish at distance with lots of lose feed maggot going in for a weight of 1lb 1/2oz with Lewis Brant 2nd with12oz and George Davies and Scott Anderson filling the next 2 spots.

A really good evening and many thanks again to organiser Pete Milburn and the senior anglers DNW, Senior Andrews and Mini me Myring for all the assistance and passing on of knowledge on the night. I was not completely convinced that the knowledge was not being passed from the Juniors to the Seniors in some cases, you know who you are and you should be ashamed.

Talking of ashamed I would just like to pass comment on the thieving, nasty individual who stole one of the competitors whips whilst he was attending the presentation I have only recently been made aware of this incident and be assured if the individual is traced he or she will be banned from fishing St Ives waters for a long time. Fishing is a friendly pastime and theft is totally unacceptable especially from a young lad just starting to build up his tackle.

County Windows Cup 2009 report

9 juniors turned up but the fishing was very poor, several senior anglers prowled the banks muttering how poor it was and what was the next days match on the same stretch going to be like.

In the end the cup was won by young Tom Davies on the prime swim opposite the rowing club with a hard fished 4oz, I watched Tom for some time and he was getting regular bites which he could not hit and I think he had lots of small Dace in his swim, he also hooked and lost a couple of Perch and a weight closer to 12oz would have been a  better reflection of his swim on the day. 2nd was Tom "I'm not a miner" Myring who fishedcloser to the bridge with a few Bleak for 2.5 oz with once again several bites missed from small fish. Marcus Lath managed third with 1oz.

The owner Of County Windows, Mr David Day, very kindly provided the cash prizes and presented them on the bank to the fortunate winners.

The fishing was badly effected by all the elements, very clear water, no stream, bright sunshine and a nasty wind plus a killer to all fishing, a full moon so well done to all 9 participants and, as was proved in the following days open, catching fish this weekend on the river was very hard indeed
